Hair Oils Vs Silicones The Natural Approach to Taming Frizzy, Unruly Hair.

By Romina Manenti

Ahh, frizz… the enemy of the “good hair day”. When you’re going for volume, shine, or defined texture, along comes frizz to ruin your plans. While it may seem like an inevitability, the reality is that it is possible to tame your frizz, and keep it at bay.

Why Your Hair Gets Frizzy

In simple terms, frizz is caused by a rough hair cuticle. When the hair gets dry and is lacking in moisture, the textured “shingle” shapes that make up the surface of the hair start to open up. This can be caused by damage from heat-styling, rough handling of the hair, cleansers with sulfates, or even showers that are too hot. This rough cuticle leaves the hair strands parched, which explains why they swell when it gets humid - the hair is “thirsty” for the moisture in the air.

Whatever the reason behind your frizz, the key to taming the frizz is to smooth the hair cuticle. When the “shingles” making up the hair surface are encouraged to lie flat, the hair is once again shiny, bouncy and can reveal its natural texture.

How Traditional  Products Work

If you have been fighting frizz for years, it’s likely that you’ve tried a lot of products. One ingredient that has been a longtime staple in many frizz-fighting products is silicone. The way that silicone works is by creating a layer around each individual hair shaft, preventing humidity from entering the cuticle (aka frizz). While in the short term these products can technically work, the build up of silicone on the hair can leave it looking dull, lifeless and flat. No moisture is actually delivered to the hair, and in fact silicone can prevent more nourishing ingredients from working.
In the long run, these silicone-heavy products can work against themselves and actually make frizz worse.

How We Tame Frizz At MAY11

Just like your skin and diet, your hair and scalp need antioxidants, fatty acids and minerals to stay healthy. Healthy hair is hydrated and smooth, and ultimately frizz-free. While there are many ingredients out there that are beneficial to the hair, the widely-adored, holy grail of hair care is Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

While some oils are considered “moisturizing” because they can penetrate the hair surface, and some are considered “sealing” as they sit on top and keep the moisture in, Jamaican Castor Oil and Castor oil are able to act as both. What does this mean for your hair? Essential nutrients and moisture are drawn within the hair fibre, and then the cuticle of the hair is smoothed. The result? Hair that is healthy, nourished, and naturally frizz-free.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil and Castor Oil on their own can be quite thick, sticky, and difficult to work with, at MAY11 we are creating unique formulas by blending these powerful ingredients and making them work for all types of hair.

Formulated without silicones, parabens, or sulfates, MAY11 Oils are formulated with highest quality ingredients to create luxurious formulas that promote naturally healthy, frizz-free hair. The hair cuticle is able to lay flat, which means… goodbye, frizz!
